The Playlist: "Steven Soderbergh's Spy Thriller, 'Knockout,' Becomes 'Haywire' & Now Set For A January 2011 Release"
When we first reported about Steven Soderbergh's spy thriller, "Knockout" starring mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano, we did say the title of the film was a working one and would probably change, did we not?

And change it has. According to tweets by Jules Asner, Soderbergh's wife, and other tweets and message board reports at a recent screening, the film is now titled, "Haywire" and has been set for a January 2011 release.

The film has an incredible supporting cast including Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender ("Inglourious Basterds," "Hunger"), Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton (who made a last minute sub-in for Dennis Quaid who had to drop out), Michael Angarano, French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz ("Amelie," Spielberg's "Munich").

The film centers on a black ops soldier (Carano) who seeks revenge after she is betrayed and set up during a mission. We read the Lem Dobbs-penned script earlier this year and it is no frills, taut and lean to the bone at just over 90 pages; a riveting and sharp read.

If the picture is screening, has a title and is scheduled, it sounds like it's basically done and awaiting its release by Lionsgate. The action thriller was shot all over the world including Barcelona, New Mexico and Dublin.

Next up for Soderbergh is the Scott Z. Burns-written virus thriller "Contagion" which is scheduled to shoot this fall in 3D and features an amazing all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard and Laurence Fishburne. Warner Bros. has already given it a October 21, 2011 release date.

Sherdog.Com: "The Top 10 Stories of the Past 10 Years"
9. Gina Carano (2007-Present)

Not women’s MMA, but Gina Carano. An important distinction.

Prior to Carano’s EliteXC debut in 2007, the idea of hosting female fighters was seen as too absurdly progressive for a sport that still nauseated a good portion of mass media. If they couldn’t accept men exchanging blood, observers figured, seeing a woman mounted and pummeled might be cause for a defibrillator.

“Conviction” -- the daughter of football great Glen Carano -- rejected that sexist attitude not by challenging it, but by ignoring it. She conducted herself as a fighter, displaying sharp skills in the ring and presenting herself as an articulate personality outside of it. Her looks? Absolutely a factor, but curiosity would’ve quickly given way to disgust if she had nothing to offer as an athlete.

It’s rare for any sports figure to have the weight of an entire genre on their shoulders. Even Ali, in rewriting boxing’s history, was still toiling in an institution that had a past before him and would have a future after him. But try to find even one piece about the females of the sport without a mention of Carano. She didn’t just define a division: She was the division.

MMAWeekly.Com: "The Fate Of Gina Carano"
The face of women’s MMA may not be back until summer 2010, according to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker.

Gina Carano, 27, is currently shooting a starring role in the Stephen Soderbergh-helmed film “Knockout.” She reportedly plays a fighter who’s hired by the government to become a spy.

When asked for an update on when Carano would return to the Strikeforce cage, Coker said, “that’s a good question.”

“Her agent and I have been in dialogue,” he added. “We had talked about having her fight again, but not fighting on Dec. 19. She’s going to acting classes, I heard, and doing a lot of weapons training, doing what they do.”

The Strikeforce executive has followed this route before. The promotion’s other crossover star, Cung Le, relinquished his middleweight title in September when a blossoming movie career overtook his fighting responsibilities. Le will return to the cage on Dec. 19 after a 21-month absence.

Coker said he wanted to meet with Carano before making any decisions on how to manage the situation.

“I’d like to sit down with her face-to-face probably in the next 30 days or so, and sit down and see where her head’s at,” he said. “By all means, we would love to have her back, and we would love to have her fight again. I think in her heart she’s still a fighter.”

Go ahead and chuckle. This may be the fight that launches female MMA to the mainstream. Even if it doesn’t, it matched the two female fighters recognized by most as the best at the time. The five minutes of non-stop action, mixed with the energy at the HP Pavilion matched any big fight atmosphere this decade, male or female!
